Cooke Tavern Soup gets a new home

Cooke Tavern Barn Raising

Cooke Tavern had an authentic Amish Barn Raising on May 11th, 2004. It was a one of those perfect days in life! The weather was wonderful, many friends, neighbors and business associates came together to experience this once in a lifetime event.

About 30 Amish from the Penns Valley area of Centre County in Spring Mills, PA gathered together to construct the 45 by 70 foot barn. The new barn was constructed on the site of the original 1808 barn that burnt down in 1913. Greg and Mary Kay Williams were thrilled to find a photo that cataloged in the local Historic Society that was taken of the property sometime in the early 1900's. They based the size, design and construction of the barn on the historic picture.

Micheal Speicher and Sons from Aaronsburg lead the entire construction of the barn.
The crew worked on the barn for about 2 months prior to the barn raising. Mr. Speicher learned how to build barns using post and beam construction from his grandfather and father.

Greg Williams, Cooke Tavern Soups President, was the mastermind behind the project. He wanted to re-create history by building a barn according to one pictured on the Historical Society photo. He worked with Speicher and Sons to ensure that the barn would be built according to historic methods; right down to using hand cut nails for the pine floorboards. The post and beam construction was finished off with being pieced together with only wooden pins-not a single nail was used in constructing the beams.

Mary Kay Williams put together a lunchtime feast for the Amish crew and on-lookers. Cooke Tavern Soups were of course part of the menu for the hungry workers and visitors.

We even named a soup after the great event: Barn Raising Country Vegetable. It is a rich mix of freeze-dried garden vegetables and is so good and nutritious that it will give you enough energy to raise a barn!

Because our loyal customers enjoy Cooke Tavern soups so much, our operation is growing and needs a new home! The barn will be the new home of Cooke Tavern Soups because we are outgrowing the spaces we now have at the Cooke Tavern property.
